Kidnapper Films
Kidnapper Films was created in 2000 by a group of ambitious filmmakers at Concordia University in Montreal. The company’s mandate was to produce intelligent comedies that possessed an off-beat sense of humor. They shared a common drive for perfection and vowed to create without compromise, making the movies they wanted to make.
Their journey began in 2001 with the short film, A Luge Son, about an ex-Olympian’s dreams for his son. Directed by Darren Curtis, the short went on to premier at the New York Independent Film Festival and won the top prize at the Montreal Student Film Festival. In 2002, there was Dudley, which visited the Austin Film Festival, Pop Montreal, and toured with the NextFrame International Festival.
Sharkboy (2003), directed by Pat Kiely, was Kidnapper’s first 35mm piece. The teen comedy about a half-shark, half-boy was officially selected at Austin, Sarasota, Long Beach and Montreal’s Just For Laughs Festival.
In 2004, Kidnapper Films began performing live. The shows, which combined live sketch acts with short films, took them to Toronto, New York, and LA “The Kidnapper Show” was earned the critics’ approval; “Hilarious” (The Gazette), “You’ll be laughing down the aisles” (Montreal Mirror), “Dudes who clearly have their wits about them” (The Hour), and “Pick of the Week” in Time-Out New York.
Kidnapper Films continued to produce short films and music videos awarding them a full showcase at the Just for Laughs Festival (2005), and the silver medal in the acclaimed BOM Awards (Best Of Montreal, Mirror Magazine, 2004-2007).
Now, Kidnapper is finally ready to unveil its most ambitious project to date: a feature length comedy entitled Who is KK Downey? It is a film that embodies the signature Kidnapper voice; a voice that has been developing over the last seven years.
