Who is KK Downey? receives New Vision Award at Cinequest!

Monday, March 10, 2008

Montreal, Monday March 10, 2008 — Atopia is proud to announce that Who is KK Downey? just won the New Vision Award at the Cinequest Film Festival in San Jose, California. The film had it’s world premiere at the festival last Thursday and was awarded the top prize in its category during last nights ceremony. Who is KK Downey? is a first feature by Montreal’s collective Kidnapper Films. Co-Directors/Actors Pat Kiely and Daren Curtis were attending along with co-stars Mat Silver and Dan Haber, producers Kieran Crilly and Brandi-Ann Milbradt as well as Atopia’s Pascal Maeder.

Who is KK Downey? is the story of two perennial losers who want more than anything to be famous, popular, and successful. The only thing is, Terrence’s indie band is a joke, and Theo can’t get Truck Stop Hustler, his touching book about a young male prostitute, published anywhere. Things change, however, when they decide to print Theo’s book under the name of its fictional protagonist: KK Downey. The book becomes a sensation, with over-privileged twenty-somethings wanting desperately to identify with the tragic figure. Things have turned around for Terrence, who poses as the enigmatic KK, but at what price?

Who is KK Downey? is scheduled to be released by Atopia in Canada and the US on September 5, 2008.
